Johnny Appleseed Parks hosting walking series

LIMA — The Johnny Appleseed Parks will be hosting its Walking Thru Autumn Hiking series beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Ottawa Metro Park, 2632 Ada Road, Lima. Pre-register by calling 419-221-1232.
Hand-made walking sticks are available for purchase at $10. If participants walk in six out of the eight hikes, they are eligible to receive a Metro Parks hiking medallion.
The public is welcome to join in for any of the hikes but will not be eligible for a medallion.

Lima Area Parkinsons Support Group at new location

LIMA — The Lima Area Parkinsons Support Group is meeting at a new location. The group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. on the first Thurday of the month at Grace Community Church, 4359 Allentown Road, Lima.

Clark County refuses jail grant, fearing overcrowding

SPRINGFIELD — County officials in central Ohio say they won’t accept an $840,000 grant from the state prison department because they fear the requirements could cause jail overcrowding.
The Springfield News-Sun reports Clark County officials say the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction grant would require the county to house people sentenced to low-level, fifth-degree felonies in local jails instead of sending them to state prisons.
It costs the state about $26,000 a year to house felons.

Elida students attend leadership conference

ELIDA — Elida High School students Cole Harmon and Jacqueline Nichols attended and competed at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in July. They competed with a Sports Nutrition project and received a silver rating in the senior category.
While at conference, they also had the opportunity to volunteer with other competitions, listen to motivational leadership speakers, network with students from all 50 states and even watch the Fourth of July fireworks in downtown Nashville.

 

Bluffton music education major to perform recital

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University music education major Samuel Black, of Deshler, will present his senior recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10 in Yoder Recital Hall, at Bluffton University, 1 University Drive, Bluffton. The recital is free and open to the public.
Black’s program features pieces for tuba.

 

American Township drop off recycling set for Aug. 3

LIMA — Drop off recycling for American Township residents will occur from 2:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, in the northwest corner of the Lima Mall parking lot, 2400 Elida Road, Lima.

News organization says photographer shot by sheriff’s deputy

NEW CARLISLE — The photographer for a small Ohio news organization who employees say was shot by a sheriff’s deputy who mistook his camera for a weapon is uninterested in seeing the officer punished.
The New Carlisle News reports photographer Andy Grimm left the office Monday to photograph lightning when he saw a Clark County sheriff’s deputy performing a traffic stop in New Carlisle, north of Dayton.
Grimm says he got out of his Jeep to take pictures of the traffic stop and started setting up his tripod and camera when he was shot in the side.

Cuyahoga County elections board investigating how building left open

CLEVELAND — An ex-Ohio congressman says he found his county’s elections board offices unlocked and unoccupied when he tried to cast an early ballot.
Dennis Kucinich says he made the discovery Saturday when he walked inside the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections to cast a vote ahead of Cleveland’s Sept. 12 primary.
Cleveland.com reports the board says no votes or uncast ballots were tampered with but an investigation is underway into why the building wasn’t secure.
