OUR OPINION: Membership will shape advisory board’s fate

Tuesday’s action by Tupelo’s City Council to create a police advisory board completes months of discussion on that topic.
Conversations about such a board emerged in the aftermath of June’s shooting death of Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert by a Tupelo Police officer. Shumpert’s death exposed a rift in the community, and protesters began to call for more accountability from the city’s police force.

TUPELO – Tupelo Police are investigating a death on West Jackson Street this morning.
Law enforcement is on the scene, and West Jackson is blocked off from Park Street to Clayton Avenue. No more details have been released at this time.
