Tuesday’s action by Tupelo’s City Council to create a police advisory board completes months of discussion on that topic. Conversations about such a board emerged in the aftermath of June’s shooting death of Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert by a Tupelo Police officer. Shumpert’s death exposed a rift in the community, and protesters began to call for more accountability from the city’s police force. A committee was formed to study the possibility of such a board and how much power it would be given.
