DCFS suspends employees, terminates contract after 14-year-old girl shackled for 5 hours

A 14-year-old girl in the care of the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services was placed in ankle shackles for a five-hour drive to a treatment facility to Missouri, a DCFS spokesman confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

As a result, DCFS will terminate its contract with the transportation service, has suspended the employees involved in the decision to use the ankle shackles – a violation of the department's recent ban on the use of hard restraints – and asked the state's Office of the Inspector General to investigate.

 

State of McHenry luncheon sold out, second date added

The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce announce Tuesday that a second date has been added for the State of McHenry Luncheon. Tickets are available for March 3.

Bowes, home health agency in Crystal Lake, to close doors

Bowes In Home Care, a Medicare-certified home health agency in Crystal Lake, will be closing its doors once it can restaff all of its patients, according to emails sent to staff members obtained by the Northwest Herald on Tuesday.

In a company-wide email from Bowes Clinical Administrator Susan Wrzeszcz, sent on Thursday, staff members were notified that the decision was made solely by Michael Collura, president and CEO of In Home Personal Services.

"I know this is a blow to you all  as it is to all of us," Wrzeszcz said

Mouths are watering across McHenry County at news of the Tartan Bistro reopening February 19. The student-run restaurant at McHenry County College has been serving gourmet, multi-course cuisine every spring semester for the past nine years.

Screenings of ‘Like’ to focus on social media use

McHenry High School District 156 is partnering with the McHenry Downtown Theater to host two screenings of the film “Like” on Monday in an effort to shine a light on society’s sometimes unhealthy connection to smartphones and social media.

The film will be shown at noon and 2 p.m. Monday, which is a day off school for Presidents Day, at the theater, 1208 N. Green St., McHenry. Both showings will be followed by a brief discussion session.

Tickets go on sale during this week, and are $3 each.

 

Hidden Pearl Coffee shop to hold ribbon cutting for re-opening

After having to move locations and having redevelopment plans fall through, Hidden Pearl Coffee is coming back bigger and better for its fifth anniversary. Owners of the coffee shop will hold a ribbon-cutting Tuesday afternoon to celebrate its reopening. 

The shop had a small reopening in December and plans to have a grand reopening later this year.

Illinois statewide hotline available for questions on Coronavirus

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is now able to conduct testing for the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), making Illinois the first state to be able to do testing in state.

Once specimens from individuals are received at the Chicago IDPH laboratory, test results are typically available within 24 hours.

IDPH is in the process of bringing testing for 2019-nCoV online in its Springfield and Carbondale laboratories.

A group of Community Unit School District 300 parents are concerned about their children’s accessibility to dual-language opportunities due to a series of proposed changes to the program.
