A year after Henry Pratt shooting, Aurora remains strong

AURORA – At 1:24 p.m. Feb. 15, 2019, the Aurora Police Department received a call about a mass shooting at the Henry Pratt company in Aurora.

“It was one of those surreal moments where I wasn’t quite sure what I was hearing over the radio,” Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman recounted Tuesday, Feb.

A Lundahl Middle School student was selected as one of the winners for a national "Protect Your Eyes" PSA contest.

Seventh grader Colleen McSweeney's PSA was submitted by her seventh grade science teacher, Amanda Stone, as part of a class assignment during extended learning time.

 

Judge grants bond for Crystal Lake Central High School student facing deportation

A Crystal Lake Central High School student could return home Thursday after spending four months in an immigration detention center battling deportation to Honduras.

Meydi Guzman was granted bond Wednesday morning when she made a brief federal court appearance by video in Cook County, one of her attorneys, Nathan Reyes said.

The 18-year-old's school counselor, Sara Huser, has since notified U.S.

 

Man left with life-threatening injuries after traffic crash in Volo

A Wisconsin man was left with life-threatening injuries after a traffic crash in Volo on Tuesday, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday.

Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded at 2:30 p.m. to Route 12, just south of Brandenburg Road in Volo for a traffic crash with injuries.

 

More than 2,000 tickets sold for Brantley Gilbert/Eli Young Band in McHenry

More than 1,500 tickets for the inaugural Rise Up Music Fest in McHenry were sold within the first 10 minutes they were available on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, that number had grown to 2,000.

The two-day musical event, organized by the RISE Up Foundation, is set for June 19 and 20 at Petersen Park in McHenry and will raise funds for a new splash pad in the city.

On June 20, the concert will be headlined by Brantley Gilbert and include the multiplatinum Grammy-winning Eli Yo

 

Home of the Sparrow hires coach to help homeless women combat unemployment, underemployment

An employment coach at Home of the Sparrow now is helping women in McHenry County break the cycle of underemployment and unemployment. The coach, Laurie Fulton, whose role is funded in part by a $10,000 gift from Northwestern Medicine, creates opportunities for women to train for and achieve livable wages so they can support themselves and their families.

“Women and children who become homeless are often unemployed and have no other support coming in,” said Matt Kostecki, executive director at Home of the Sparrow.

 

District 300 parents in opposition of dual-language changes pack school board meeting in Algonquin

Stacy Davis, a parent in the Algonquin-based Community School District 300, said during Tuesday’s school board meeting that she loves the district’s dual-language program and the tremendous effect the program has had in her three children’s hearts.

Therefore, she was sad to hear that there have been talks to restructure the schools with dual-language offerings, which could limit students’ accessibility to such programs.

“This program matters and it should not be executed with short-term vision,” Davis said.

 

McHenry High School students credit biomedical class for preparing them for emergencies

When Breanna Darcy, 17, a senior at McHenry West High School, decided not to go to school Dec. 12, she said she’s glad she didn’t. That day, her twin brother, David, a Type I diabetic, was admitted to the ICU hours before he could’ve died. Thanks to Darcy, he didn’t.

Her brother began vomiting that morning, Darcy said. Thinking it wasn’t serious, her mother dismissed going to the hospital.

“He had a previous history of migraines and headaches his whole life, even before he had diabetes.

 

Snow, subzero temps on the way for northern Illinois counties

For the first time this winter, northern Illinois may see subzero temperature lows with an incoming snowstorm.

Gino Izzi, meteorologist for National Weather Service out of Chicago, said the more northern part of the state is looking at a prolonged light snow event starting as early as Wednesday afternoon. The storm will develop from the south and travel north from there, meaning areas around Interstate 80 could be looking at the storm starting between 1 and 3 p.m.
