Lynell Brunner wanted to run. A Grand Junction Municipal Court judge had just sentenced him to a year in jail for theft. Brunner couldn’t believe it, so he asked the judge to repeat herself. One year. Then he took off running out of the courtroom. “I felt scared,” Brunner said, recounting the April hearing to a reporter during an interview from jail.
