Connecticut’s two U.S. senators will travel to Puerto Rico this week to learn about the ongoing damage from Hurricane Maria.

“This trip will shine a glaring light on Puerto Rico’s continuing humanitarian and economic crisis,” said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) in a release. “Since I last visited the island in October, the federal response has been shamefully inadequate. Across Connecticut, I have heard heartbreaking stories from families who have recently arrived and other families still on the island.”

These are the words Kristi Larson, head of the English Language Learner program at Stamford High School, used to describe 18-year-old Erwin Hernandez, a senior who was seriously injured last week when a car crashed into the restaurant where he worked.

Hernandez was working in the kitchen at Table 104, a restaurant on Long Ridge Road, when a vehicle crashed through the kitchen wall on Wednesday, causing serious damage to his right leg.

Light snowfall Saturday could hamper the travels of those looking to get out of town for New Year’s Eve, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts.

The NWS says that there is a 90 percent chance of snow in Southwestern Connecticut today, with the highest amounts expected along the coast.

Snow is expected to start falling around 7 a.m. before kicking up a notch around 1 p.m. Between 1-3 p.m., the NWS predicts one to two inches of snow to accumulate, making for “slippery traveling conditions” around the state.

STAMFORD — A Board of Representatives committee this week backed Mayor David Martin’s request to reappoint all four members of his cabinet. The seven members of the board’s Appointments Committee attending the meeting unanimously approved Director of Legal Affairs Kathryn Emmett and Director of Public Safety, Health & Welfare Ted Jankowski, the minutes show. Director of Administration Michael Handler was approved 6-1, and Director of Operations Ernie Orgera, 3-1 with three abstentions.

STAMFORD — Officers arrested a local man Thursday afternoon after they allegedly found a large quantity of fentanyl in the man’s jacket.

Stamford Police Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said officers were conducting a foot patrol at about 4:45 p.m. near Main and Atlantic streets in response to a recent increase in complaints of drug and alcohol abuse in the area.

During their patrol, Pinto said the officers smelled marijuana and found two men sitting at a bus stop.

STAMFORD — City police arrested a homeless man on a burglary charge early Wednesday morning after he allegedly entered a residence to get warm.

Stamford Police Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said officers responded at about 12:50 a.m. to a residence in the 300 block of Sound View Avenue after the homeowner reported hearing someone in the residence.

Pinto said the man reported hearing a noise downstairs and went down to see what it was. That’s when he heard someone in the kitchen cough and ran back upstairs to notify authorities.

STAMFORD - Police arrested a local man Tuesday afternoon on a warrant charging him with various drug-related offenses.

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said officers initiated an investigation of Stacey L. Sawyer, 31, a little more than two weeks ago after receiving information that he was selling drugs from his Spruce Street residence.

Conklin said investigators with the Narcotics and Organized Crime divisions obtained a search warrant for the apartment and executed that search on Dec. 9.

STAMFORD - After receiving information of an alleged impending drug deal, city police arrested two suspects and charges are pending against a third.

Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin said officers received information that Raymond Delgado, 25, of Bridgeport, was planning to make a drug sale Tuesday evening on Henry Street. A description of the vehicle Delgado would be driving was also given, he said.

Investigators with the Narcotics and Organized Crime divisions set up in the area, Conklin said, and waited for the vehicle to arrive.

STAMFORD - Police are investigating reports of two residential burglaries that occurred Tuesday but are not believed to be related.

Stamford Police Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said the first burglary was reported just before 11 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment in the 1000 block of Bedford Street.

Pinto said a woman reported that someone rang her doorbell, but since she was not expecting anyone she did not answer the door.

“About five minutes later, the woman came downstairs into her kitchen and saw someone climbing through her kitchen window,” Pinto said.
