Mayor to address city

Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy this evening will give her ninth annual State of the City address. In the speech, Piercy will list the city’s major accomplishments of 2012 and outline goals for the new year. The address will take place in the Hult Center for Performing Arts.

 

Mudslides plague passenger trains north of Seattle

SEATTLE — Mudslides continue to plague passenger rail traffic north of Seattle. Tracks between Seattle and Everett have been closed for passenger trains 95 percent of the time since Thanksgiving, Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said. He said there have been 75 slides in that period.

 

Oregon State Fair may get new management

SALEM — Management of the Oregon State Fair may be changing hands again. The fair and exposition center functioned as an independent agency until 2006, when lawmakers wanted to wean the operation from tax dollars and put it in the Department of Parks and Recreation, which receives lottery proceeds.

CORVALLIS — An 89-year-old woman was out to get her mail just before 1 a.m. today when she was struck and killed by a car south of Corvallis, Benton County sheriff’s officials said. The victim is identified as Hannelore Zimmerman.
