‘Dragging the gut’ is inspiration for car culture exhibit

Call it the old days of social networking. In the 1940s and ’50s, there was one guaranteed way for a guy or girl to go see and be seen on a Friday or Saturday night: “dragging the gut” along Main Street in Springfield or Willamette Street in Eugene.

For Springfield artist Charlene Eckman, Yellowstone National Park has long been a beloved place to explore nature, learn about history and take countless photographs of natural wonders. Eckman has visited the park nine times since 1967.

Egypt coup is justified I was disappointed in the July 5 editorial, “Egypt’s devastating coup,” that criticizes those who brought down Mohammed Morsi without explaining why more than half the population wanted him booted out. In that part of the world democracy is a barely understood concept.

McKnight completes Army basic training Army Pfc. Justin McKnight­ has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. McKnight is the son of Allene McKnight of Springfield and Joe McKnight­ of Eugene. He is a 2004 graduate of Thurston High School.

Children invited to library’s animal show Zany Zoo will bring the Animal Fair to the Springfield Public Library for two shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. today. Children will get to meet and learn about many different reptiles and mammals.

Incidents FRIDAY, JULY 5 Dispute: 9:38 p.m., 300 block South 41st Street. A caller said a man threw a dresser out of the second-story window of a house during a dispute. Two men were seen fighting outside. Reckless endangering: 5:06 p.m., 3000 block Gateway Street.

 

Thurston High football camp opens Aug. 5 for all ages

The Thurston High football team will host its annual summer football camp in early August. The Colts’ coaching staff and varsity players will help conduct drills and teach the basic skills of the game to kids ages 5-14 on Aug. 5-15.
