Straily delivers for A’s as starter

Former Thurston High standout and current Oakland Athletics pitcher Dan Straily has continued to impress in his first full season of Major League Baseball. Straily, a compact 6-foot-2, 215-pound right-hander, made his MLB debut for the Athletics last August after making a quick rise through Oakland’s minor league system.

 

Champions for all seasons

The 2012-13 school year came to a close with graduation this month, which provided an opportunity to reflect on another impressive year in prep athletics at Springfield and Thurston high schools.

Incidents FRIDAY, MAY 31 Loud noise: 11:49 p.m., 2700 block I Street. A caller said neighbors were playing volleyball outside her bedroom window. The caller said she asked them to be quiet — and took video of the game as proof they had been loud.

Chamberlin finishes basic training Air Force Airman Cassandra Chamberlin has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio Chamberlin is the daughter of Laurie and George Chamberlin of Springfield, and is a 2012 graduate of Thurston High School.

Business leaders have long been championing a shift in the way education is delivered to students in order to improve their employability in the 21st century workforce. Educational leaders have embraced the shift under the acronym STEM, calling for more of a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.
