Loose trailer hits vehicle, kills driver

VALDOSTA, Ga. — State troopers in south Georgia say a trailer towed by a pickup truck came loose and hit another vehicle, killing the driver.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Chris Kelch said in an email that the crash happened about 5:25 p.m. Thursday in Valdosta.

Kelch said a white 1990 Ford pickup towing a grain hauler was rounding a curve when the trailer came loose and hit a white 1996 Dodge Stratus traveling in the opposite direction.

 

Connecticut keeps 1968 Ga. fugitive

SHERMAN, Conn. — An attorney representing a man who has been living in Connecticut as a fugitive for 48 years after fleeing a Georgia prison work camp says his client will be allowed to remain in the state.

Norm Pattis tells the Hartford Courant Connecticut officials have accepted terms to allow 71-year-old Robert Stackowitz to stay in Sherman under the supervision of a state parole officer until 2022.

 

Gas supplies expected to soon return to normal

 
Some local stations are still out of gas, but the panic seems to be over after Colonial Pipeline announced it has restarted the pipeline.
On Monday, drivers flooded gas stations in the Augusta area seeking gas. Some drivers reported going to several stations before finding fuel. The panic arose after Colonial Pipeline discovered a major leak that dumped out 252,000 to 336,000 gallons. The pipeline section that failed ran from Mississippi to Atlanta.

 

Augusta Commission, school board hold joint meeting

Richmond County Board of Education and the Augusta Commission are having a breakfast meeting Friday to discuss the needs of the school district.
Board President Helen Minchew said the meeting is an opportunity to update the commission and other elected officials on the status of the school system.
It will include a presentation by Superintendent Angela Pringle on the system’s strategic plan for improvement, she said.

 

Allen announces art competition for 12th District students

U.S. Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.-12) today announced the opportunity for young Georgians in the 12th Congressional District to participate in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition.
The competition is open to high school students, grades 9-12, who live or attend school in the 12th District, according to a news release from Allen’s office. The winner will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year, alongside other winning entries from across the country, and will also be invited to attend a special ceremony in Washington, D.C.

 

Police arrest couple after investigating roach-infested home

A severe roach infestation is one reason an Augusta mother is now facing charges and her home has been condemned.
According to an incident report, Cythia Carol Westberry, 50, refused to acknowledge there was an issue at her home even though deputies and code enforcement officials described it as unlivable. Police said Westberry was living at the home on the 2400 block of Young Drive with her 14-year-old child and another adult child who is disabled.

 

Tech hires new athletic director

 
 
 
ATLANTA — Georgia Tech moved quickly to land a new athletic director, appointing former Yellow Jackets football player Todd Stansbury on Thursday to take over a program that has struggled to make its mark in the crowded Atlanta market.
 
Stansbury served for the past year as Oregon State’s athletic director, and he previously ran programs at Central Florida and East Tennessee State.
 

 

Company restarts gasoline pipeline after leak in Alabama

ATLANTA — Colonial Pipeline restarted the gasoline pipeline in Alabama that had been shut down because of a major leak, which caused shortages and surging fuel prices across the South.
The pipeline was reopened Wednesday evening, company officials said in a statement. The pipeline leak was discovered Sept. 9 near Helena, Alabama, when state workers noticed a strong gasoline odor and sheen on a man-made retention pond.

The Latest: Charlotte shooting protests

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The latest on police shooting and protests in Charlotte, North Carolina (all times local):
9:10 p.m.
The emergency medical service in Charlotte says a person has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.
Charlotte Medic tweeted that the person was injured Wednesday night but didn't give details.
The service says it has taken eight patients — seven law-enforcement officers and one civilian — to area hospitals during protests over the police shooting of a black man.

 

Sheriff's Office continues search for homicide suspect

Nearly a month after the shooting death of Lawaun Flournoy, police are continuing their efforts to bring someone to justice.
About 30 officers from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office went door-to-door Wednesday, canvassing the nearby streets where the 38-year-old was killed.
“The community needs to know we’re going to do what it takes to solve this homicide,” Lt. Allan Rollins said. “If that means going door-to-door in the rain – we’ll do it.”
