2 charged after man dies from overdose

A Lancaster man and woman have been charged with drug trafficking and weapons violations arising from the fatal drug overdose of an acquaintance last week, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday. 

 

Irma evacuee, 77, disappears from Sun City

A Hurricane Irma evacuee from Florida, waiting out the storm with family at Sun City Carolina Lakes, disappeared Thursday afternoon, and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding him.

 

Price-gouging law in effect

COLUMBIA – State Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Wednesday that South Carolina’s law that prevents price gouging is now in effect, since Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency.

 “With the possibility that Hurricane Irma could make landfall in South Carolina, our people have already started making preparations,” Wilson said. “We can expect normal price increases, but we may see businesses and individuals looking to unfairly take advantage of the situation.”

 

Governor declares state of emergency

COLUIMBIA – Gov. Henry McMaster issued a state of emergency for South Carolina at noon Wednesday as Hurricane Irma took aim at the east coast of Florida.

 

German grocer Lidl to open in IL Sept. 21

Lidl (pronounced like “needle”) will open its Indian Land store Sept. 21, the first of four opening this month in the greater Charlotte area.

The new discount German grocery store is at 9990 Charlotte Highway, in front of the Indian Land Walmart.

Customers will be able to take advantage of get-them-while-you-can grand opening special offers at the new stores. 

The first 100 customers to arrive at each store on opening day will receive a wooden coin for a chance to win up to $100 in Lidl gift cards. 

 

IL Fall Festival organizers plan music, food and fun

With two music stages, a variety of food trucks and a later evening end time, organizers of the Indian Land Fall Festival are making changes to the long-standing Panhandle event to make it a full day of activity.

The Oct. 28 event has been moved to the Indian Land school campus from the CrossRidge Center in an effort to include five zones of activities, as well as two entertainment stages and the car show.

 

1st S.C. death from West Nile this year

COLUMBIA – An Anderson County resident has died from West Nile Virus, the first such occurrence in South Carolina this year.

In 2017, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has confirmed seven human cases of West Nile Virus, along with detection in 10 birds and 55 mosquito samples.

The risk of serious illness or death from West Nile Virus is low. Less than one percent of people infected develop a potentially fatal swelling of the brain, known as encephalitis.

 

SCDOT website to track state’s 10-year roads plan

COLUMBIA – The S.C. Department of Transportation has launched a website to track its progress on the 10-year plan for restoring the condition of South Carolina’s highway system after 30 years of underfunding.

The website will feature project lists for three of the four major programs that comprise the plan:

• Highway safety – SCDOT will address the “worst of the worst” roads, in terms of highway safety, by improving 100 miles per year with a plan to make these roads safer in 10-mile segments.
