Post office meeting canceled

A U.S. Postal Service meet and greet with postal officials scheduled for Sept. 11 in Fort Mill has been canceled due to anticipated inclement weather from Hurricane Irma.

"Safety is a top priority for the U.S. Postal Service," USPS spokesman Philip Bogenberger said Friday. "We plan to reschedule the event soon and will notify the public when a new date is selected."

Rabies case reported in Lancaster County

A Lancaster County dog tested positive for rabies on Thursday, causing one person to seek medical attention after potentially being exposed, according to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The incident happened around Cedar Creek and Hoke roads, just west of Heath Springs.
On Monday, the dog began to show “abnormal activity” like ramming into objects, obsessive digging, lethargy and extra salivation. The victim was possibly exposed to the dog’s saliva while trying to provide care for the animal, according to a DHEC release.

 

Civic leader charged in domestic-abuse case

A Lancaster business owner and civic leader was arrested last week after his wife accused him of threatening her while holding a handgun, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
Chris Tillman, 50, of 1943 Havenwood Drive, was charged with one count of first-degree domestic violence after the Aug. 30 incident.

 

‘I’m in shock’ – Local ‘dreamers’ worry about future if DACA dies

Some local “dreamers” are worried about their jobs and futures after President Trump this week ordered an eventual end to the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

 

Linda Blackmon’s win affirmed

In a unanimous opinion late Thursday, the S.C Supreme Court affirmed Linda Blackmon’s election to the Lancaster City Council’s District 3 seat, which had been held up since last November by a legal challenge from her opponent.
“I feel amazing…. It’s been tough,” said Blackmon, who beat incumbent Jackie Harris in the Nov. 8 election by a 281-225 vote.
The Supreme Court’s decision, issued as an administrative opinion, upholds Circuit Judge Brian Gibbons’ Feb. 16 ruling that allowed the election results to stand.

 

Irma evacuee, 77, found safe after disappearance

A Hurricane Irma evacuee from Florida, waiting out the storm with family at Sun City Carolina Lakes, disappeared Thursday afternoon, prompting the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office to ask for the public's help in finding him.

The man, John D. DePasquale, 77, was located Thursday night and is safe, sheriff's spokesman Doug Barfield said in a Friday morning release.

 

USPS to hold public meeting

The U.S. Postal Service will host a public meet and greet with local and district postal officials at the Spratt Building in Fort Mill, Sept. 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Spratt building is located in downtown Fort Mill at 215 Main St.

The purpose of the event is to give local residents an opportunity to meet postal officials and receive updates about postal operations, ask questions, and sign up for a new USPS service called Informed Delivery, a free service that lets residents see what letters will soon arrive in their mailboxes.

 

Employee, friend charged in thefts from pawn shop

A Lancaster teen and his friend were arrested last week after his boss at a pawnshop accused him of stealing thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry and selling the jewelry back to the store, according to a sheriff’s office incident report.
