BUNNELL - A 56-year-old man remained in jail Thursday charged with with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting merchant, grand theft, and illegal use of shopping carts following an incident that occurred at a Palm Coast Wal-Mart.According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Kevin Leahy, 56, listed as a transient, was arrested Tuesday after he threatened employees with a metal baseball bat when they tried to stop him from shoplifting.A Wal-Mart employee told deputies that Leahy approached her at the store's MoneyCenter and sought money from a credit card

 

Sheriff: Inmate told Texas jailer of prior suicide attempt

DALLAS - A woman whose death in a Texas jail has raised suspicions about the official conclusion that she hanged herself told a guard during the booking process that she had tried to kill herself in the past, according to the county sheriff.
Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith said Wednesday that two jailers interviewed Sandra Bland after her arrest.

Ormond Beach 11-year-old starts business to save for car

ORMOND BEACH – Eleven-year-old Joseph Cofer was thinking ahead one day and wanted to start saving for a car.“I knew babysitting wasn't for me, and it wasn't on a regular basis,” he said.The Cofer family began to discuss various business options.“We travel around the state a lot and we saw a woman with a popsicle stand and a line of people waiting to get one,” said Kellie Cofer, Joseph's mother.

DELEON SPRINGS – Each fall a field of gold and yellow sunflowers has passersby on Lake Winona Road stopping to look, take pictures, pick and admire. The flowers have delighted people for years, much to the joy of the woman for which they were planted – Joyce Shuman.Shuman and her husband of 62 years, Jack, are the owners of the sunflower garden. Though Joyce is shy about her story, it's as beautiful as those blazing sunflowers filling the field on an autumn day.As you may have guessed, sunflowers are her favorite flower.

DAYTONA BEACH - The Daytona Tortugas didn't need many runs with hard-throwing lefty Amir Garrett on the mound Wednesday, but they broke out the bats and put up a few anyway en route to a 5-2 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs in front of 2,909 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.In his second start since getting the win in the All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati on July 12, Garrett (6-6) cruised, striking out seven over seven innings to get the win."I've just been getting more comfortable as the season goes along," Garrett said.

 

Ben Hall named head baseball coach at North Carolina A&T

Ben Hall, who played at Seabreeze High, Stetson and Daytona State, was named head baseball coach at North Carolina A&T.
Hall was named interim coach all 2014 after head coach Joel Sanchez was dismissed. The Aggies went 10-36 overall, 7-17 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last season, but went 6-6 over their last 12 games.
"Our program's first priority is to lead our student-athletes as they develop into men while striving for success on and off the field," Hall said.
