Newtown school officials weigh enrollment decline

NEWTOWN — School officials left a Saturday morning retreat still considering how best to tackle declining school enrollment, a trend that has re-opened discussions about closing an elementary school.

Much of Saturday’s meeting focused on whether Superintendent Joe Erardi should further study shuttering a school— and idea heavily debated and ultimately tabled last summer — or if reconfiguring the district’s facilities could open space for municipal use, an early childhood education center or other options.

Vehicle crashes into Lake Lillinonah

State police said that a vehicle with occupants crashed into Lake Lillinonah from the boat launch on Saturday.

Police said dive teams, a marine one boat and a heavy duty wrecker were responding to the scene.

Police in New Milford and Newtown said dive teams from their departments had been dispatched to the scene. Brookfield Police also confirmed their units were responding.

DANBURY — Shortly after pleading not guilty to charges of witness tampering, a Danbury pet shop owner learned that prosecutors are considering adding to previously filed charges of animal cruelty against him.

State troopers were dispatched to Wooster Mountain Shooting Range, 74 Sugar Hollow Road, about 2 p.m. after the facility manager noticed that a gun owner smelled like alcohol and was having trouble walking, according to a news release.

When troopers arrived, they seized his firearms and ammunition and escorted him to the parking lot, where Straub failed the field sobriety tests, according to the release.

 

Cause of Christmas fire still under investigation in Danbury

Some of the apartments on the second floor and one of the apartments on the third floor were damaged by the flames, but the firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to the attic.
