Oakwood Hills appoints new trustee after Kurt Hummel resigns

Oakwood Hills resident Jessica Alm was appointed to the Village Board after the board accepted Trustee Kurt Hummel’s resignation during its meeting Thursday night.

Village President Chad Rider said Hummel was working as a trustee up until Thursday despite submitting his resignation earlier.

 

Huntley residents in assisted-living facility renew marriage vows in special ceremony

The staff of White Oaks of Huntley and Kindred Hospice collaborated Friday to organize a vow renewal ceremony for residents of the assisted-living facility and their spouses.

White Oaks at Huntley administrator Megan Benzel said staff had spoken with the facility’s hospice chaplain, who agreed to lead vow renewals for some of the hospice patients.

From there, Benzel said, the idea grew into something bigger, where families, employees and nonhospice patients were invited.

Crystal Lake lane closure, roadwork postponed

Roadwork in Crystal Lake on the westbound Crystal Lake Avenue lane that would have led to a lane closure and detour has been postponed.

Westbound Crystal Lake Avenue originally was going to be closed between East and Main streets beginning Monday, but the work will instead take place at the end of the month or in early March, according to the city.

When work begins, the road is slated to remain closed for utility work for about a month.

State Rep. Steve Reick seeks to replace DCFS in McHenry County

A bill submitted Thursday by state Rep. Steve Reick would create a county-controlled, state-funded agency to replace the Department of Children and Family Services’ McHenry County office.

Reick spoke at a news conference Friday about the death of Crystal Lake’s AJ Freund, whose parents are accused of beating the 5-year-old to death in April.

 

Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 teacher receives National Board Certification

A teacher at Crystal Lake’s Hannah Beardsley Middle School was one of only 175 educators in Illinois to receive National Board Certification in 2019. 

Eighth grade language arts teacher Patricia MacNally recently was recognized by the National Board Certification for Professional Teaching Standards for renewing her National Board Certification, according to Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47.

MacNally is one of only a handful of District 47 teachers to receive the recognition. 

 

Crystal Lake woman's wearable art creations on display in St. Charles

Timeless, one-of-a-kind, classical art creations you can wear, designed by 92-year-old Dyllis Braithwaite, will be featured in “Dyllis Braithwaite – We Love What You’re Wearing!” an exhibit at the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles.

Braithwaite, a longtime Barrington resident who recently moved to Crystal Lake, will be on hand for the opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The show runs until March 21.

On view will be 40 of her wearable art creations.

 

Feds to track how private Medicare info gets to marketers

WASHINGTON – A government watchdog plans to launch a nationwide probe into how telemarketers may be getting a hold of seniors’ personal Medicare information, a red flag for potential fraud and waste.

An official with the Health and Human Services inspector general’s office told The Associated Press that the audit will be announced next week.

 

U.S. and Taliban agree to truce, way forward in Afghanistan

MUNICH – The U.S. and the Taliban have agreed to a temporary truce that, if successful, would open the way for a deal that would bring American troops home from Afghanistan and end 18 years of war.

The peace deal would call for negotiations between Afghans on both sides of the conflict to start next month, an eventual countrywide cease-fire and a commitment from the Taliban not to harbor terrorist groups such as al Qaida, while setting a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.

China reports major drop in new virus cases, 143 new deaths

BEIJING – China reported a figure of 2,641 new virus cases Saturday, a major drop from the higher numbers in recent days since a broader diagnostic method was implemented.

The number of new deaths rose slightly to 143, bringing the total fatalities in mainland China to 1,523.
