2nd grader growing hair for cancer

Theodore Kirk, a second grader at Valley View Elementary School in McHenry, has been growing his hair for two years to donate it to a kid who lost theirs because of cancer treatment.

Theodore said his dad, Tim Kirk, a teacher at McHenry West High School, inspired him to do the deed. Tim shaved off his 3-year-old beard last year, something he did for fun, he said.

With March Madness looming, lawmakers renew college athlete endorsement push

SPRINGFIELD – One month ahead of the tipoff of March Madness, Illinois lawmakers – backed by a pair of NBA brothers – are renewing a push to allow college athletes to profit from the use of their name and likeness.

Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch called a Chicago news conference Friday to push for his Student Athlete Endorsement Act, or House Bill 3904, which is awaiting a vote in the Illinois Senate.

“In a little over a month, the NCAA is going to see its cash cow start – March Madness,” he said.

A bill submitted Thursday by State Rep. Steve Reick would create a county-controlled, state-funded agency to replace the Department of Child and Family Service's McHenry County office.

Reick spoke at a news conference Friday about the death of Crystal Lake boy AJ Freund, whose parents are accused of beating the 5-year-old to death in April.

 

Crystal Lake Lane closure, road work postponed

Road work in Crystal Lake on the westbound Crystal Lake Avenue lane that would have led to a lane closure and detour has been postponed.

Westbound Crystal Lake Avenue was originally going to be closed between East Street and Main Street beginning in the early morning on Monday, Feb. 17. The roadway was supposed to remain closed for about one month for utility work.

 

Cary man accused of possessing child pornography

Police on Thursday arrested a Cary man accused of possessing multiple pornographic images of young girls.

Sean M. Keady, 25, of the 400 block of Redwood Drive, is charged with three counts of possession of child pornography.

The Prairie Grove School District 46 Board approved four administrator contracts at its meeting Tuesday night, with salary increases included in all of them.

Director of Student Services Rachel Keesey is set to make $115,122 in the 2020-21 school year under her new contract.

 

McHenry Township votes to become a gun sanctuary

McHenry Township board trustees voted unanimously on adopting a resolution to make the township border a sanctuary for gun owners at the township board meeting Thursday evening.

A gun sanctuary prohibits or impedes the enforcement of certain gun-control measures perceived as violative of the Second Amendment.
