Classier name? Inslee wants new moniker and new money for college financial-aid program

SEATTLE — For almost 50 years, Washington has written billions of dollars in financial-aid checks to Washington college students through a program with a most uninspiring name: the State Need Grant.
Now Gov. Jay Inslee wants to give the program a big boost in funding, and to rename it with a sunnier moniker.

 

Classes back in session at Cascade where teachers and staff hope to get back to ‘normal’

EUGENE, Ore. — Students will be back in class Monday at Cascade Middle School where administrators, teachers and counselors hope the school day is “as normal as possible” in the aftermath of a fatal officer-involved shooting on campus last week.

 

Several boats damaged in Seattle marina fire

SEATTLE — At least three boats were damaged in a fire at Seattle’s Lakewood Moorage marina.
KOMO reports the Seattle Fire Department responded to moorage on Lake Washington around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about 20 minutes, Tinsley said.
A 59-year-old man was transported to Harborview with minor burn injuries.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

 

2 female victims unharmed after UPS hostage situation

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — An armed man who entered a UPS processing facility Monday morning in New Jersey and took two women hostage as other employees ran for safety was shot and wounded before being captured, officials said.
The man was taken into custody. Neither woman suffered injuries. All other employees got out of the building safely, Gloucester County Prosecutor Charles Fiore said.
The gunman wasn’t identified by authorities.

House Dems announce sweeping investigation of drug pricing

WASHINGTON — A leading House Democrat is announcing a sweeping investigation of the pharmaceutical industry’s pricing practices.
Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said Monday that he’s sent letters to 12 major drug manufacturers seeking detailed information and documents about pricing practices for brand-name drugs to treat diseases including cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and nerve pain.
