Safety advocates call for smarter headlights

Many U.S. motorists are driving blind, and they probably don’t even realize it. Their headlights rely on antiquated technology that fails to properly illuminate the roadway but manages to blind oncoming drivers.
That could change, however, if the federal government allows a new generation of headlights on the road.

 

L.A. school district, striking teachers negotiate through weekend

LOS ANGELES — Teams from the Los Angeles Unified School District and the teachers union worked long hours this weekend to settle a teachers’ strike that has so far cost students five days of normal instruction.
The office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, which is mediating the talks, has been sending out the news of when the negotiating sessions start and stop. With both sides honoring a confidentiality agreement, that is about the only information being released.

Tim Martinez: Competition committee could help struggling programs

Last week, we talked how the Representative Assembly of the WIAA would be considering a proposal that would help level the playing field by using socioeconomic factors.
Next week, the Representative Assembly will vote on a proposal that will allow schools with a high percentage of students on free/reduced lunch to lower the enrollment number used to place them into one of six classifications.
