Farmers adjust for low rain, cattle market

As the corn harvest progresses through the end of October, Texas Panhandle farmers are feeling the pinch of a shrinking beef market and a dip below normal precipitation levels.
Whereas Wesley Spurlock’s annual corn harvest brought in about $4.20 to $4.50 per bushel last year, the Stratford farmer and National Corn Growers Association president now expects to earn $3.30 to $3.70 per bushel because of a worldwide commodity downtrend.
“It has to do with amount of corn produced in the U.S. and Brazil and Argentina,” Spurlock said, referencing three beef production hubs.

The lack of available officers means that, according to APD officials, officers are notified on almost a daily basis that help is needed, and asked to cover shifts around the clock.
“We’re about 26 short of where we’re supposed to be,” Hilton said.
