APD, DPS searching for stolen patrol vehicle

The Amarillo Police Department and Amarillo Department of Public Safety are searching for a stolen DPS patrol vehicle after a suspect broke in and drove off with a vehicle from the home of a DPS trooper early Thursday morning.
At around 6 a.m., APD and DPS units were dispatched to the 7100 block of Columbia on an auto burglary. The DPS trooper came out to their patrol vehicle and found a suspect inside of it.

Free parking might be a thing of the past in downtown Amarillo — at least near the proposed multi-purpose event center.
With the Buchannan Street parking lot nearing completion, Local Government Corp. board members questioned how the city might curb free parking in the area.
During its Wednesday board meeting, the group briefly discussed the idea of installing parking meters on downtown streets near the parking garage and restricting parking at the Civic Center during large events to encourage use of the new parking lot.

The important text message awoke Jason Crespin in his New York hotel room at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday.
He had just been eliminated from the “Live with Kelly and You” competition, where the grand prize would have been co-hosting two shows with Kelly Ripa.
The Amarillo Little Theater director settled for fourth place.
“Bummed for sure,” was one of his reactions in a Globe-News phone interview Wednesday morning. “It was just my time to go, I guess.”
Still, he said, it was a great experience all around.

 

Extra roadblocks remain for female entrepreneurs

Business owners and community members looking to jump-start their own ventures gathered Wednesday at Focused and Fearless, an event intended to help women break into the world of entrepreneurship.
Hearing from established professionals like Amarillo City Councilwoman Lisa Blake and Michelle Reichert, the Pantex deputy enterprise manager, inspired Kimberly Griggs to better herself.
Griggs, a sales director for television broadcasting company Raycom Media, said she is considering becoming a marketing consultant.

 

TxDOT names new Amarillo District PIO

There’s no point in trick-or-treating at Amarillo City Hall this Halloween. Community Relations Coordinator Sonja Gross won’t be home.
This Oct. 31 marks Gross’s last day with the City of Amarillo before starting as the Texas Department of Transportation’s public information officer for the Amarillo District. She will begin her new role on Nov. 1.
With Gross’ assistant Jesse Patton having been in his current position less than a year, the city will likely advertise its new vacancy and opt to hire someone from the outside, Gross speculated.

 

10lbs of marijuana found at gas station

Potter County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a pair traveling with more than 10 pounds of marijuana at a gas station on Interstate 40 Monday evening.
Two deputies stopped at a Love’s Truckstop around 6 p.m. and parked next to a 2015 Nissan Altima that had the smell of marijuana coming from it.
Deputies made contact with two passengers inside the vehicle when the driver approached after leaving the store. After searching the vehicle deputies found roughly 10 pounds of marijuana and 50 grams of TCH wax inside.

 

Shelter receives 51 animals from same resident

Amarillo Animal Management & Welfare reported Wednesday they have accepted 51 animals since Oct. 3, all surrendered from the same Potter County resident.
The arrival of so many new animals has significantly added to the shelter’s population, continuing their high intake level as well as highlighting their recently updated euthanasia policy.
Richard Havens, AAM&W director, said the unidentified owner originally surrendered 11 animals in early October, but on Tuesday added three dozen dogs, a horse and a donkey.
