Early morning Amarillo traffic accident claims life of child

A one-car accident involving a high-rate of speed and alcohol early Sunday has claimed the life of one child and sent a teen to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police were called to the 3200 block of South Georgia at 5:31 a.m. Sunday.
A 2008 Ford Mustang driven by Darius Francisco Bustos, 17, had been northbound on South Georgia from 34th Ave. at a high rate of speed.
Police said Bustos lost control of his car, striking a tree.

 

Two thrown from motorcycle in Amarillo, one critically injured

An Amarillo woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a motorcycle accident at South Bell and the I-27 frontage road early Sunday.
Amarillo police were called to the scene of the accident at 5:43 a.m. Sunday.
A 1999 Honda motorcycle driven by an 18-year-old man described by police as a white male failed to make a turn on the southbound frontage road of I-27.
Police said the driver failed to control his speed and struck a curb, ejecting both himself and his passenger, described as a 19-year-old white female.

Marching band contest tells story of renewal and carrying the torch

Seven months ago, Dalhart High School band director Jim Paslay lay in a hospital bed, paralyzed from head to toe.
On Saturday, he stood and led his students in the Region 1 Marching Band Contest at Dick Bivins Stadium.
“Brother…words can’t express it,” Paslay said before arriving at the stadium. “It’s phenomenal. Walking that band out there and watching them perform is everything to me.”
Paslay, 49, was hallucinating when his wife Nicole brought him into the E.R. in January.

 

Developer wants tiny homes in Amarillo

What comes to mind when you hear the words “tiny house subdivision”?
If your first response was Amarillo, and not treehugger, hipster or Austin, you’ve likely been hanging out with Danny Schallenberg.
Schallenberg is from Spur — another place one wouldn’t naturally associate with tiny homes.
But it’s Schallenberg who is in talks with Amarillo city leaders about building a subdivision filled with the affordable, turn-key micro-homes.

 

Cancer journey brings woman closer to community

Debbie Gloor has always been compelled to help others because she feels it is the right thing to do, but a battle with breast cancer opened Gloor’s eyes to a new perspective on the impact her giving can create.
Gloor, a retired middle school teacher from New York, moved to Amarillo with her husband about a year and a half ago to live closer to her children and grandchildren. In September 2015, four months after her move, Gloor was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The article will focus on the self-described “mom and pop shop” and owner Gene and Mary Ann Hurt’s strong business ethics. The Hurts have owned G&M Farnsworth Transmissions, located just off of I-27 South, since 2004.
