Why does Donald Trump still have a large following after the Jan. 6 insurrection, 34 felony convictions, being held liable for sexual abuse, refusing to return classified documents, making incoherent speeches and promising to be a dictator (“only”) on Day One? Maybe it’s the same reason why some children who have been removed from a home because of abuse or neglect still want to return to that home even after being placed in a secure, stable environment. Those Trump supporters have a sense of belonging and blind loyalty, and they don’t feel comfortable leaving it. Do Trump supporters only remember the Trump they first knew, and continue to build on those memories, instead of listening to the new Trump and his threats to democracy? Love is blind.
