CANYON LAKE, CA - Born in Hawkins County Tennessee, daughter of Avery Clyde Booher & Zella Mae Booher(Adams).
Freda lived a fulfilling life as a mother to Anthony Lee Christian & Melissa Christian Woods children of Lee Roy Christian. She shared her life with 3 grandchildren Tiffany, Tanya & Amy, great friends and a mother to many.
Over the years she enjoyed bowling, motorcycle riding, Nascar and family outings.
Per the family, services will be private.

 

Alan W. Cook

PINEY FLATS - Alan W. Cook, of Piney Flats, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 24, 2109.
Mr. Cook was born in Little Falls, NY and has lived in TN the past 23 years.
Alan served 26 years in the Army National Guard and retired from Silgan in 2014.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Shawn Daniel Cook, and his brother, Russell Cook.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Tina Morgan Cook. He was a loving father to Nicole (Michael), Ashley and Melanie (Jacob). Proud grandfather of nine grandchildren.

 

Cherokee cadet makes Appalachian Regional All-Star Leadership Team

ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee High School Cadet Commander Travis Baxley was selected to the JROTC Appalachian Regional All-Star Leadership Team Thursday during the Johnson City Cardinals JROTC Night.
The all-star selection of cadets emulates that of an all-conference athlete.
Cadets around the region were recognized for their demonstrated leadership, commitment to excellence, and academic performance within their perspective JROTC units.
Baxley, a senior, took the helm as Cherokee’s cadet commanding officer in May 2019.

KINGSPORT - Janice Bartlett Walker, 66, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 26, 2019, with her loving family by her side.
Arrangements will be announced by Oak Hill Funeral & Cremation Services.

 

Maria Combs Still

KINGSPORT - Maria Combs Still, 77, of Kingsport, went to be with her loving Lord on August 25, 2019 after a brief illness.
Born in Bluff City, TN, she was a graduate of Bluff City High School and resided in Kingsport most of her life.
She was employed in the Purchasing Department of Holston Valley Hospital prior to working with her beloved husband, Stanley, in his Certified Public Accountant business. She was a longtime member of Kingsport’s First Broad Street United Methodist Church, a recent member of First Baptist Church and served in the Civitan Club for many years.

HCSO seeks man accused of abandoning nine dogs to starve

CHURCH HILL — Eight dogs were rescued from a Hawkins County residence near Church Hill on Friday morning where they had reportedly been abandoned for at least 11 days with no food or fresh water.
A ninth dog was discovered dead at the residence located at 352 Payne Ridge Road, and now the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office is looking for the alleged owner.
An arrest warrant for nine counts of aggravated animal cruelty has been issued for Benjamin Reese, 35, 352 Payne Ridge Road, Lot 5, near Church Hill.

Civics 101: Naturalization test includes reading, writing, speaking English

This feature focuses on civics. But for immigrants who reach the opportunity to try to become naturalized U.S. citizens, there is another key factor: They must prove they can read, write and speak English.
According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service:
• During an applicant’s naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask questions about the person’s application and background. The applicant will also take an English and civics test unless he or she qualifies for an exemption or waiver.

 

Seed giveaway to be held in Scott County

GATE CITY — Farmers and landowners are invited to a seed giveaway later this week in Scott County.
Who: The Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District — located at 369 Gateway Plaza, Suite 101, in Gate City — will be giving away food plot seed blends free to the public.
When: The giveaway will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday. Seed blends must be picked up in person.
What: Two different types of seed blends will be given to each person. One will be a small seed blend containing crimson clover, alfalfa, daikon radishes, chicory, rape and turnips.

 

Tennessee suspends CB after domestic assault charge

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt suspended Bryce Thompson indefinitely following the cornerback’s arrest on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge, issued a statement about student safety and now is letting the legal process play out.
“That’s all we’re going to talk about that for right now,” Pruitt said during his first Monday news conference of the season, referring to the statement he had released earlier.
