Great Body Company works to stop injuries before they can happen

KINGSPORT — Kingsport firefighter John Lufi has been dealing with some physical issues — injuries both recent and from before he started working for the city.
A month or two ago, he got hit in the head, which jerked all the muscles in his back. Prior to coming to Kingsport, Lufi dislocated his shoulder and was never able to finish therapy. His muscles were cramping, giving him headaches and taking a toll on him.
But now, with the help of a new preventative medical wellness program at the Great Body Company, Lufi is getting some relief for his niggling injuries.

Human remains found in Scott County

WEBER CITY — Officers with the Virginia State Police are investigating after human remains were found Sunday near Wadlow Bridge off Wadlow Gap Road in Scott County.
State police said authorities out of the Wytheville Field Office were called to the scene at 4:43 p.m.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Roanoke for examination, autopsy and positive identification, and the investigation is ongoing.

 

K-Mets sweep Jays, move into wild-card tie

KINGSPORT — Five pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout to keep Kingsport in the thick of the Appalachian League playoff race.
Starter Jordany Ventura threw four innings of no-hit ball and the K-Mets took a 3-0 win over Bluefield on Sunday at Hunter Wright Stadium.
On the heels of the three-game sweep of the Blue Jays (30-34), the K-Mets (33-32) are a half-game behind West Division-leading Bristol in the standings and tied with Johnson City in the wild-card race.
Hector Rodriguez (3-2) gave up a hit and two walks over two innings in notching the win.

 

Theater company to hold performance, workshop at First Presbyterian Church

KINGSPORT — First Presbyterian Church’s first ever performing arts series is winding down with a live show and acting workshop.
Friends of the Groom Theater Company will lead both events on Sept. 6 and 7, and tickets are still available. Mark Davis, director of music ministries at the church, said the group will engage an audience of all ages with unique stories and powerful messages.
“This drama troupe of three professional actors and playwrights is nationally known, and they are brilliant at writing scripts that hit us in our everyday life.

 

K-Mets ticket deal helps Goodwill, Second Harvest

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets and Goodwill Industries of Tenneva are encouraging the community to come out for the final Family Night at Hunter Wright Stadium this season to take advantage of a special ticket offer and help others in the area at the same time.
On Monday, anyone who makes a donation to either Second Harvest Food Bank or Goodwill will be able to buy one general admission ticket and get one free.

 

Carnival Cafe's 4.5 pound Philly Cheese Steak Challenge claims two victims

ROGERSVILLE — Two challengers separated by 43 years in age took on their own 4.5 pound mountain of Philly Cheese Steak Saturday, with similar results.
Despite their age difference, 15-year-old Cody Keen and 58-year-old Phillip Braim have a few things things in common.
Both are involved in highly physical calorie burning activities. Keen plays football for Cherokee High School, and Braim is a fitness enthusiast, as well as a tree cutter with Asplundh Tree Expert LLC.
They’re both also big fans of Carnival Cafe, located on Highway 11-W on the western outskirts of Rogersville.

 

Robert Franklin Davis

JOHNSON CITY - Robert Franklin Davis, 85, of Johnson City, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019, at Steadman Hill Assisted Living.
He was born in Anderson County Tennessee, a son of the late Frank and Mary Bearden Davis.
Robert served in the U.S. Army on the Military Police force and worked at Holston Defense. He was a big UT Vols fan and loved to ride his bike and spend time with his great granddaughters.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Davis, and brother, Roy Gene Davis.

 

Mrs. Nancy Lilley Dearstone

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Nancy Lilley Dearstone, age 73, Jonesborough, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mrs. Dearstone was born in Washington County, TN and the son of Sarah Buckingham Lilley, Jonesborough and the late Carroll Lilley.
She was a member of Erwin Church of Christ.
Mrs. Dearstone was a Chartered Organizational Representative and Committee Chairperson for Boy Scout Troop #134 of Jonesborough for many years. She was a volunteered at Jonesborough Middle School.

 

LaWanda Light Dickerson

FALL BRANCH - Mrs. Lawanda Light Dickerson, age 97, of Fall Branch, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, August 24, 2019, at her home.
Mrs. Dickerson was a lifelong native of Washington County and the daughter of the late William Barton & Myrtle Mae Light. She was the oldest of six children and was very close with all of her siblings. She attended Johnson City Business College after high school and she went on to work at Holston Defense, then Y-12 (in Oak Ridge), while her husband was in the Navy during WWII.
