It took a while, but performers got across the full emotional impact of repressive authority figures on young people in a provincial German town brilliantly, in the rock musical "Spring Awakening" staged Sunday at the University of Oklahoma. Backed by the music of Duncan Sheik, the lyrics of Steven Sater could be hard to hear at first, behind masks, but soon got through to socially distanced spectators in the Tony Award-winning musical, based on a ground-breaking 1891 play by Frank Wedekind. Well directed by Shawn Churchman, it was performed Friday through Sunday, for only one week rather than two (due to weather), at OU's Elsie C.
