SW Virginia towns need to put ecotourism 'puzzle' together, entrepreneur says

PENNINGTON GAP — Ecotourism may only be one of many answers to boosting Southwest Virginia’s economy, but it deserves effort. That was the message from a discussion panel at the Pennington Gap Community Center on Tuesday, hosted by citizens’ group New Economy Network and community organization Appalachian Voices. About 25 area residents heard panel members discuss what they see as opportunities and challenges that local governments, tourism entrepreneurs and Southwest Virginia face in planning, developing and marketing attractions based on natural resources in the region. Wally Smith, a biology professor at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, said his experience stems both from studying area wildlife and from being an avid hiker.
