Anita's growth results in $2M expansion

KINGSPORT – A construction contract was approved Tuesday by the Kingsport Economic Development Board (KEDB) to expand the Anita’s Snack Foods facility in the Gateway Commerce Park. Blountville-based J.A. Street General Contractors got the project, valued at about $2 million. Anita’s is a privately owned, family-run snack food manufacturer based in San Bernardino, California. When the company took over the former Pure Foods building last August, plant manager Greg Kennedy said Anita’s planned to employ more than 100 people by the first of the year. “They are planning on adding additional (production) lines and need additional warehouse space,” according to KEDB’s November minutes. The company had invested $500,000 in the facility and that amount was expected to grow to $4 million over the next few years, Kennedy added. KEDB, at its May meeting, approved the Anita’s lease for the building. City Manager Jeff Fleming previously said the company’s decision to locate in Kingsport reflects the Tri-Cities’ important location in a national market.
