Rogersville skateboard facility to be converted into dog park with grant funds

ROGERSVILLE — A skateboarding facility built in 2007 at Rogersville City Park will soon be outfitted to accommodate furry creatures on four legs instead of kids on four wheels. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen received news Tuesday that it is one of 36 communities or agencies in Tennessee to receive a $25,000 Tennessee Dog Park Dash from the Randy Boyd Foundation. Rogersville’s skateboard park was opened in 2007 after a group of youngsters raised a significant portion of the cost and petitioned the BMA to allow the park to be built. But those youngsters have long since grown up and probably have children of their own by now. Apparently local interest in skateboarding waned, and people stopped using the facility, which is located in the northeast corner of the City Park between the swimming pool and Highway 11-W. The skate park, which is a duel level concrete pad containing a handful of rails, has been padlocked for years. When the BMA heard of an opportunity for funding to convert it into a dog park, it authorized City Recorder Glenn Hutchens to apply for the grant. Hutchens said the Parks and Rec board will work on a design for the dog park and return to the BMA with a recommendation. The Tennessee Dog Park Dash, funded by the Boyd Foundation, is dedicated to building or enhancing dog parks across the state. The program was created this year and seeks to make Tennessee the most pet-friendly state in in the U.S.
