The competition came out in force during the final four hours of election qualifying in Chatham County on Friday. District 3 Commissioner Tony Center joined incumbent Al Scott in the race for chairman of the county commission. Both qualified as Democrats. In District 2, meanwhile, former District 2 Savannah City Council candidate Detric Leggett qualified to run against incumbent Commissioner James “Coach” Holmes. In the undefended race to succeed Center in District 3, Democratic candidate Anne Scheer and Republican candidate Felix Maher on Friday joined Democrats Bobby Lockett and Sabrina Greene-Kent, who qualified earlier in the week. In District 5, incumbent Yusuf Shabazz and Tabitha Odell, both Democrats, qualified to face off against a former Democratic candidate for District 5 on Savannah City Council, Shaundra McKeithen, who qualified earlier this week. Incumbent District 7 Commissioner Dean Kicklighter got some competition Friday from Alizina Wallace-McCoy, a Democrat. And Chester Ellis, a Democrat, qualified Friday to run for the seat of retiring District 8 Commissioner Priscilla Thomas against Tyrone Ware, also a Democrat, who qualified earlier in the week. With the addition of Democrat Kim Middleton Friday, the race for the next four-year term of sheriff has burgeoned to a candidate pool of four.
