BLOUNTVILLE — Outgoing Sullivan County Director of Schools Jubal Yennie said he was told two things he needed to do when he first came to Sullivan County five years ago.One was to acknowledge the “Jubal, Jubal, Jubal” reference from the old Andy Griffith Show, the other was for Yennie, who earned his doctoral degree at Vanderbilt University, to play the iconic “Rocky Top,” identified with University of Tennessee football. He did the first in a Board of Education meeting, with the help of then-Chairman Ron Smith, and the second at his first mass teacher in-service meeting, where he played “Rocky Top” on his guitar. But as Yennie wraps up his five years in Sullivan, not everything has been as rosy or simple as Mayberry or “Rocky Top.”For one thing, his first months as director included speaking to students at Sullivan Central High School after a school lockdown, during which a school resource officer and sheriff’s deputies shot an armed man in the school.
