Seeds: Lessons of California’s drought from 1976

Some tips for water conservation never get old, but how far can you push your plants to survive with less water? What does drought stress look like? This young rose bush shows typical signs. The leaf tips turn brown due to “burn,” caused by lack of water to the roots. Those leaves will eventually die and fall off. Lawns at the Capitol, pictured on July 3, are being allowed to go brown to illustrate the seriousness of the drought.
