No-fishing zones created off Carolinas coast

The South Atlantic's first no-fishing zones to protect deep-water reef fish, including four off the Carolinas, have been created. The eight “marine protected areas” will cover 529 square nautical miles from North Carolina to Florida, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said today. The action has been debated among fishermen and fisheries officials for more than 16 years. The zones will protect slow-growing species that are easily overfished: snappers, groupers, tilefishes, grunts, porgies and sea basses.
