Snowy owl population spikes in Massachusetts

The state Division of Fish and Wildlife reports an unusually high number of snowy owls wintering this year in Massachusetts. Most of the owls have been reported in coastal areas, where the dunes and grasslands match the Artic tundra where the birds breed. They have been spotted on beaches and in conservation areas on the South Shore and Cape Cod.
