Officers from each of the Savannah-Chatham police department’s five precincts and its special operations division have been organized into a team to curb street robberies and other violence. As they reported for duty Wednesday afternoon, members of the special response team were tasked by Interim Chief Julie Tolbert and Interim Assistant Chief Terry Enoch with being visible in certain “hot spot” areas of the community in the hopes of deterring crime.“The public’s outcry has been about being transparent and being visible and getting them out of the cars and on foot patrol and on bicycle patrol, and that’s exactly what we intend to do,” Tolbert said. She said an increased presence of uniformed officers might make people think twice before committing violent acts.Recently, street robberies have been up nearly jurisdiction-wide.“During this time of year, we do see some spikes in Part 1 crimes,” said Enoch, who organized the response team.
