Howard bans distribution of sugary drinks on county property

Order aimed at childhood obesity criticized by beverage industry, county residentsHoward County Executive Ken Ulman on Tuesday banned the sale of high-sugar drinks such as soda in parks, libraries and other county properties and at county-sponsored events — hoping again to make the county a progressive model. At left, 9.6 tons of white sand, representing the amount of sugar students at Burleigh Manor would consume in a year if each drank one 12-ounce soda per day, are dumped in the school's parking lot.
