Lima Exchange Club to hear follow up on opioid addiction

LIMA — The Lima Exchange Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at Milano Cafe, 2383 Elida Road, Lima.
Guest speakers include Dr. Wheeler and Susan Hawk from St. Rita’s, holding a follow-up discussion from the Aug. 28 meeting on opioid addiction.
A board meeting will follow.

 

Rethinking high school: an all-star TV special to air Friday

NEW YORK — Another school year is starting across the nation.
But in what kind of schools?
Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hanks, Anna Deavere Smith and Common are just a few of the celebrities joining forces for “EIF Presents: XQ Super School Live,” a special one-hour telecast that will invite the public to consider the state of high schools today and what they might be in the future.

 

Ohio troopers report 24 crash deaths over Labor Day weekend

COLUMBUS — The State Highway Patrol says two dozen people died in crashes around Ohio during the long Labor Day weekend.
Troopers report at least 22 crashes resulting in 24 deaths between Friday and Monday. They say nearly half of the people who died weren’t using safety equipment such as a seat belt or a motorcycle helmet, and alcohol was a contributing factor in at least four deaths.
The patrol says provisional data indicate that troopers made over 33,000 traffic enforcement stops during the holiday period.

LAFAYETTE — Drop off recycling for residents in Lafayette and Jackson Township will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the parking lot of the fire station, 215 E. Sugar St., Lafayette.

 

Bluffton Church hosting 5K

BLUFFTON — Bluffton Trinity United Methodist Church is hosting its fourth annual De Colores Dash 5K at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Bluffton Park, 800 County Line Road, Bluffton. Cost is $20 per racer.
Following the race there will be live music with Matt Deter and friends, inflatables, bounce house and bungee run. Lunch is included with race registration.

 

Hilliard teen to be tried as adult in alleged school attack case

COLUMBUS — A judge has ordered a 17-year-old boy tried as an adult on suspicion of plotting an Ohio school shooting.
The boy was arrested nearly a year ago after another student alerted school officials with concerns about the alleged plot at Hilliard Davidson High School in suburban Columbus. No attack took place.
Franklin County Juvenile Court Judge Terri Jamison made the ruling Wednesday after reviewing case evidence including evaluations by two psychologists.

 

Jail supervisor in Cuyahoga County sentenced for misusing database

EUCLID — A supervisor at an Ohio jail has been sentenced to probation and has agreed to never work in law enforcement again after pleading guilty to misusing a police database to look up information about his estranged wife’s boyfriend.
Cleveland.com reports 50-year-old Steven Key, who worked at the Cuyahoga County jail annex in Euclid, was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days probation.

Alliance bus driver placed on leave after texting allegation

ALLIANCE — An Ohio bus driver has been placed on leave following allegations he was speeding and texting while driving a bus without students on it.
The Review in Alliance reported Wednesday that an investigation was launched after a video of the bus was posted on social media.
Alliance City Schools says in a statement that student safety is its top priority and the district will again communicate its safety policies to transportation employees.

 

Delphos Jefferson and St. John’s schools hosting financial aid meeting

DELPHOS — Delphos Jefferson High School and Delphos St. John’s High School are holding a financial aid program at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Delphos Jefferson Senior High School Career Center, 901 Wildcat Lane, Delphos.
Melanie Weaver, director of financial aid at Ohio Northern University, will be explaining the college financial aid process and how to fill out various financial aid forms for parents. She will also be discussing how to fill out the FASFA for the 2018-19 school year.
