At least five dead in I-84 bus crash

PENDLETON — At least five people were killed and about 20 injured in a bus crash on Interstate 5 east of here this morning, according to the Oregon State Police. The bus lost control on the snow/ice-covered westbound lanes of I-84 near milepost 227, police said.

 

More shots fired; another man arrested

SPRINGFIELD — For the third time in less than 24 hours, a 20-something man was arrested here after allegedly shooting a .22-caliber handgun into the air early this morning. Kurt Stephen Elkins, 25, of Springfield, was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Shorebirds killed by vehicle, authorities say

LONG BEACH, Wash. — Ninety-two Dunlin, a Sandpiper-type of shore bird, were killed on Thursday when a car drove along the beach and through their flock just north of Cranberry Beach, according to the Wildlife Center of the North Coast in Astoria.
