Guardsman sentenced

The former Oregon National Guardsman who sexually abused a fellow guardsman’s 11-year-old daughter was sentenced Tuesday to 37½ years in prison, with lifetime post-prison supervision, by Deschutes County Circuit Court Judge Stephen P. Forte.Forte found Florentino Allen Valdez, 35, of Bend, guilty on Oct. 9 of two counts each of first-degree rape and sodomy, and five counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Grant to aid OSU planning

The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development recently awarded a grant to the city of Bend to help plan for transportation needs at the new Oregon State University-Cascades Campus, planned for southwest Bend.Karen Swirsky, a land use and transportation planner for the state agency, said DLCD has not yet determined the size of the city grant.

 

Pond mudflats under water

Mirror Pond’s mudflats were under water again Monday as the end of irrigation diversion upstream left more water in the Deschutes River.The Central Oregon Irrigation District ended its diversion upstream of Mirror Pond on Monday, leaving about 200 cubic feet per second of water in the river, said Kyle Gorman, regional manager for the Oregon Water Resources Department.
