Oct. beach run to benefit Sabine Pass lighthouse restoration

Hosted by the Cameron Preservation Alliance, funds from the run will help restore the Sabine Pass lighthouse. Last year's October run raised $30,000.

Case against former judge dropped

More than a year after former Jefferson County District Judge Layne Walker was accused of misusing office equipment and employees, a felony charge of abuse of official capacity against him was dropped this week.
According to a May 2016 grand jury indictment, Walker was accused of using a government computer, printer and four government employees for personal gain between Oct. 18, 2005, and Jan.

 

Witness for Botley says former BISD auditor met standards

A long-awaited ruling on a former Beaumont ISD auditor's accountancy license is not expected until 2018, after eight days of hearings rehashing his work and papers from 2010, 2011 and 2012 ended this week.
Elvis Foster, a designated expert witness for Gayle Botley, testified Thursday that though some of the BISD papers had "some rough edges," they substantially complied with auditing standards, a claim the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy is disputing.

 

Bevil Oaks flood history sign gets new benchmark

The sign erected previously erected by the city of Bevil Oaks showing historical flood levels in the Pine Island Bayou communities has gotten a new benchmark. A stripe of blue paint shows Harvey's record breaking flood stage at over 34 feet above sea level.
