West Valley City • Utah’s 45th liquor store — and the first built in seven years — is expected to open Tuesday in the rapidly growing southwest section of Salt Lake County, according to the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
The new wine and liquor store, located in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter at 5675 W. 6200 South in West Valley City, is among the largest stores in the state at 13,500 square feet.

Embattled Salt Lake County Recorder Gary Ott in talks for early retirement, says aide

Gary Ott, the embattled Salt Lake County recorder whose mental cognition has apparently declined in recent years, is in tentative talks to retire early from his elected post.
Ott’s aide and longtime friend Karmen Sanone told The Salt Lake Tribune that the recorder has offered to discuss terms of his retirement before the end of his elected term, which runs through 2020.

 

Fire in Bryce Canyon National Park blocking traffic

A brush fire in Bryce Canyon National Park has blocked traffic there, according to a tweet from park officials.
The tweet indicated traffic has been halted on State Highway 12, but that traffic should resume soon. A firefighter crew from the park is battling the blaze.

Sources: Zinke to urge diminishing size of Bears Ears National Monument

Washington • Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has submitted to the White House an initial report on possible changes to the Bears Ears National Monument that could diminish its size and put the onus on Congress to take further action.

Utah State demonstrators protest Koch brothers donation

Logan • Protesters at Utah State University are speaking out against a $25 million donation from the billionaire Koch brothers.
The Logan Herald Journal reports the group projected a massive image of the brothers on the side of the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business on Friday. The picture shows the two men with the word “Sold!” above their heads.
The protest comes after Utah State announced two gifts totaling $50 million, the largest in school history.

 

High winds topple 4 semis on I-80 in Tooele County, knock out power in Salt Lake area

High winds on Interstate 80 in Tooele County caused four semi-rigs to topple on Monday morning, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
Wind also may be responsible for power outages nearly 6,000 homes and businesses in Salt Lake County — including at the Salt Lake County Government Center.
The semi accidents occurred at mileposts 82 (westbound lanes), 79 (westbound lanes), 77 (westbound lanes) and 72 (eastbound lanes), according to the UDOT.

 

Name of man who shot neighbor Murray shooting suspect released

Police on Monday released the name of a man accused of fatally shooting a neighbor on Sunday following a drunken altercation outside of a Murray apartment complex.
Carl David Johnson Jr., 56, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of first-degree felony murder, said Murray Officer Kenny Bass.
Jail records show he also was booked on suspicion of using a concealed weapon in commission of a violent felony, which is a second-degree felony.

Dog mistreatment argument led driver to run over and kill man, and then to disguise the car, West Valley City police say

A jail record says the driver suspected of killing a man who complained about the way the driver treated a dog, changed the car’s wheels and painted parts of the vehicle to disguise it.
Aaron D. Hosman, 40, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail Sunday on suspicion of murder and obstruction of justice. Formal charges have not been filed.

Girl killed by car in Provo is identified, supporters ask for help for her grandpa, cousin

The 6-year-old girl killed Saturday when a car drifted off a road in Provo has been identified as Iris Arnold.
Provo police on Monday confirmed the girl’s name after a GoFundMe account was created to help pay for the girl’s funeral costs and the medical expenses of Iris’ grandfather and 5-year-old boy cousin. They were injured when the car hit them.
The accident occurred at about 3 p.m. in the 2900 West block of Center Street, according to police.

 

Wildfire, believed to be caused by target shooters, is nearly contained in Saratoga Springs

Firefighters are nearing containment on a brush fire near Saratoga Springs.
The fire began shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday on the south side of the town above Lake Mountain Estates. Target shooters are suspected of igniting it, KUTV reported. More than 200 acres burned.
About 1 a.m., the Saratoga Springs Fire Department announced on Facebook that only the fire’s north flank was burning. Firefighters were on hand throughout the night to monitor the fire and extinguish hot spots.
