FBI director warns of ongoing Russian 'information warfare'

WASHINGTON – FBI Director Chris Wray said Wednesday that Russia is engaged in “information warfare” heading into the 2020 presidential election, though he said law enforcement has not seen ongoing efforts by Russia to target America's election infrastructure.

Wray told the House Judiciary Committee that Russia, just as it did in 2016, is relying on a covert social media campaign aimed at dividing American public opinion and sowing discord.

 

Senate acquits Trump of impeachment charges

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump won impeachment acquittal Wednesday in the U.S. Senate, bringing to a close only the third presidential trial in American history with votes that split the country, tested civic norms and fed the tumultuous 2020 race for the White House.

With Chief Justice John Roberts presiding, senators sworn to do “impartial justice” stood and stated their votes for the roll call – “guilty” or “not guilty” – in a swift tally almost exclusively along party lines.

A 53-year-old Spring Grove man was among 14 individuals who were arrested in January following a multi-day human trafficking suppression campaign conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group.

Investigators joined a coalition of law enforcement agencies in a nationwide effort to target customers of prostitutes, also known as “Johns,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The initiative was a web-based operation using classified advertising websites regularly used as a medium

McHenry County committee votes to delay start date of mileage reimbursement elimination

The McHenry County Administrative Services Committee voted Wednesday to delay the effective start date of a resolution seeking to eliminate mileage reimbursements for County Board members to attend regularly scheduled meetings.

But in light of recent allegations against McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks, one committee member suggested that matters such as these should be put on hold and the County Board instead should focus on state-mandated matters for the time being.

Funeral arrangements set for former City Council member

Funeral arrangements have been set for former Crystal Lake City Council member Ralph M. Dawson.

Dawson died Jan. 30 at Journey Care Hospice in Barrington with his family at his side, according to his obituary.

The visitation be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 419 E. Terra Cotta Ave. in Crystal Lake and one hour prior to memorial services 11 a.m. Friday also at the funeral home.

 

Kirkpatrick, Raine join The Harvard State Bank Board of Directors

David Kirkpatrick and Tom Raine have joined The Harvard State Bank Board of Directors, effective Jan. 1.

Kirkpatrick has about 25 years of experience in a variety of areas of industrial business. He also is a private pilot. He flies for both recreation and as work for Alumitank. David and his family reside in Darien, Wisconsin.

Raine joined The Harvard State Bank about six years ago and has more than 20 years of lending and management experience in the banking industry.
