Police aim to solve mystery after skull found in vacant home

ROME, Ga. — A   Georgia   man and an estate sale manager clearing out his grandfather's house in Rome came upon an unusual discovery — a human skull.
Ashley Norris says his grandfather owned a drug store in the 1950s, and the skull was found in a cabinet with display items such as old clocks with Coca-Cola signs on them.
Norris said he was going to throw it out, but the real estate agent listing the home came by that day and found it intriguing. Trinie Davis took it back to her office and had it about a month before questions were raised.

 

Hundreds turn out for Parkinson fundraiser

Hundreds turned out Saturday morning to take part in the CSRA Parkinson Support Group's annual fund-raising walk.
Now known as the POP (People of Parkinson’s) Walk, it was held at First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way Extension.
Proceeds are used to pay for new and ongoing research grants, provide a respite program for caregivers, and fund educational materials and events and set up exercise and aquatics classes.
 

 

Screven County rolls to fifth consecutive victory, defeats Harlem

HARLEM — Screven County will roll into its bye week with plenty of momentum after extending its winning streak to five Friday night.
Armani Bunbury accounted for four touchdowns and No. 10 Screven County rolled to a 42-10 victory over Harlem.
Screven County improved to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in Region 4-AA play. The Gamecocks scored more than 30 points for the fifth consecutive contest.

Laney routs Westside to snap winless streak

With chest bumps and smiles across the field, Laney carried a sense of relief to the locker room after the final whistle Friday night.
The Wildcats rode their stifling defense and the production of Mario Sumpter and Willie Eubanks III to a 48-0 rout of Westside for their first win of the year and an important one for the region standings.

Signal Corps Band no longer based at Fort Gordon

In a ceremony Friday, the 434th U.S. Army Signal Corps Band, which has been at Fort Gordon since the 1950s, cased its colors to align with its new unit out of Fort Jackson.
“It’s a sad day,” 1st Sgt. Lori Nix, who plays the bassoon and saxophone in the band, said immediately after the morning ceremony, “but it’s been an honor too.”

New Augusta Public Transit buses unveiled

Excitement was high at a Friday unveiling of new Augusta Public Transit buses and paratransit vehicles – but city leaders say expanding the system to better meet the public’s needs will take time and money.
Environmental science students from two magnet high school schools gave their seal of approval for the new, more efficient buses, painted with vibrant splashes of green and brown and a large city logo.

Police arrest two men in Burke County shooting

Two of three men who police said shot and attempted to rob a man in Burke County early Thursday are in custody.
According to a Burke County sheriff’s news release, deputies were called to a Claxton Road residence in the Girard area about 9:35 a.m. The victim told police he was returning to his home when three people attempted to rob him. The robbers shot the victim in the leg and ran into the woods.

Class action lawsuit to proceed against Sentinel Offender Services

One of the civil lawsuits against private probation company Sentinel Offender Services will proceed to trial as a class-action case.
Friday’s ruling by Judge Daniel J. Craig means that anyone sentenced for a misdemeanor offense in Columbia County Superior Court may be a party to the lawsuit that seeks to recover from Sentinel all fees paid to the for-profit company.
