W.va. Senate Oks Bill With Casino Smoking, Tobacco Tax

By Eric Eyre A bill that raises West Virginia's tobacco tax and exempts racetrack casinos from county smoking bans sailed through the state Senate on Friday - but with one day left in the legislative session, its passage is still very much in question.Senators downplayed parts of the bill (HB2646) that allow casinos to have smoking sections, but touted provisions that earmark new tax revenue for veterans and volunteer fire departments."There isn't a member of this body who doesn't know the great dedication volunteer firefighters provide to the citizens of this state and the continuing struggle they all have to raise money for their operations," said Sen.
