WISE — Wise Central passed one test and failed another Wednesday in preseason basketball play. The defending VHSL Class 2 state champion Lady Warriors opened play in the annual Candace Rakes Memorial Jamboree with a win over Galax, the Region 1C runner-up from a year ago. Wise Central closed the jamboree with a loss to Gretna, a team that advanced to the Region 2C semifinals last season. DRAMATIC FINISH Central and Gretna battled basket for basket in the jamboree’s final game at the Virginia-Wise Prior Convocation Center before Gretna held on to take 37-36 victory. Makeila Mease led Gretna in scoring with 10 points, while Wise Central was led by Hannah Carter’s 15 points and Dee Cvetnich’s 11. COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN Wise Central battled back from a 10-point deficit to take a 33-31 win over Region 1C power Galax. Brittany Mullins led the Lady Warriors with 11 points, while Brook Porter and Cvetnich scored 10 apiece. Flossy Brady led Galax with nine points. RYE COVE WINS TWO The Rye Cove Lady Eagles took a 32-30 win over Jenkins, Kentucky, and beat Twin Valley 25-20. Despite the wins, Rye Cove coach Kelly Hood pointed to her team’s weaknesses. “We’re inexperienced on defense and some of the angles to take and the help side and things like that,” said Hood.
