Subject: Pros & Cons using Apple’s Disk Utility vs. SoftRAID for Managing RAID sets ? I’ve been using Apple’s Disk Utility (DU) for ages and purchased a SoftRAID full license in Dec 2015 to handle RAID sets beyond what DU offered. The prospect of configuring RAID-5 using SoftRAID appealed to me for protecting against a single drive failure.

Without a reason it became unmountable and was grayed out in Disk Utility. Running under 10.10.5 OSX the disk utility thing never helped. By using STELLAR PHOENIX mac software I was able to completely verify my entire 3TB hdd, save this session, and recover folders one by one to smaller hdds.

Disk Utility was repeatedly reporting errors and "disk is corrupt" messages, and repeat runs did not fix. The only problem I ran into with fsck_apfs was the drive was FileVaulted and fsck_apfs stopped with a message about unable to unlock.

Disk Utility and Finder use the same underlying application to burn disk images, which is hdiutil. You can do this in Terminal directly: hdiutil burn /Path/To/DiskImage.iso I think the reason why people preferred Disk Utility is because it wasn’t possible to confuse file burning with disk image burning like Finder does.

So I rebooted in to Recovery Mode, started Disk Utility, set "Show all devices" and "Show Snapshots" under "View" menu and then delete the snapshots both on the System disk level as well as on the Data partition. Then re-do the First-Aid on Container disk level and data disk level. All with 0 errors.
