CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer High School NJROTC drill team took second place overall in the Elite Division at the South Iredell Marine Corps JROTC Drill Meet on Nov. 2 in Statesville, N.C., and brought home multiple individual awards. The Volunteer team competed in Personnel Inspection, Color Guard, Armed Squad and Unarmed Squad and earned awards for each. Although this was Volunteer’s first time competing at South Iredell, JROTC units representing the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps participated. Among the individual honors were: * First place Personnel Inspection: Cadet Commander Aaron Keith, Unit Commander * 1st place Color Guard: Cadet Commander Aaron Keith, Color Guard Commander * Second place Armed Squad: Cadet Chief Petty Officer Steven Devore, Armed Squad Leader * Second place Unarmed Squad: Cadet Chief Petty Officer Brandon Smith, Unarmed Squad Leader * Second place overall: Cadet Commander Aaron Keith, Battalion Commanding Officer and Drill and Color Guard Team Captain Cadets from all schools and divisions competed as individuals in Knock-Out. One judge calls drill commands and all the cadets must execute them correctly or get knocked out of competition by the remaining judges. Special recognition went to Cadet Miles Adkins (freshman) for placing seventh out of more than 100 cadets in Knock-Out Drill.
