While many residents and business owners on Tybee Island agree something must be done to deal with the illegal activities that arise during events like Orange Crush or spring break, the bulk of the city’s elected officials signaled Wednesday that a proposal to ban open air consumption of alcohol isn’t it — at least not this year. Two separate motions to insert language into the city’s code of ordinances that would prohibit consumption of alcohol in public places during these events failed to garner enough votes to pass on first reading this week, effectively ending any hope that such a change could take place before Orange Crush, which is scheduled to take place this year on April 15 and 16. As originally proposed, the amended ordinance would prohibit consumption of liquor, beer and wine in “public areas,” including city beaches, parks, parking lots, walkways and sidewalks throughout the month of April.
