In Stamford, reps from the city, state Department of Transportation, Stamford Hospital and People Friendly Stamford — a bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy group — urged commuters at the Stamford Transportation Center to ditch the shuttles and taxis and to walk instead. Travers, who became transportation chief in February, has said a major focus of his is making the city more pedestrian friendly with infrastructure and safety improvements. A recent study also found the shuttles used by employers, hotels and apartment complexes have created a dangerous degree of congestion at the station’s bus depot.
