Park gets new memorial to Elizabeth Jackson

On Saturday, July 29, Andrew Jackson State Park will host the St. Andrews Society of Columbia for an unveiling of a new memorial to Elizabeth Jackson, mother of the seventh president, Andrew Jackson.  
The St. Andrew’s Society of the City of Columbia, a charitable and social institution, is composed of Scotsmen, the sons, grandsons and great-grandsons of Scotsmen and Scotswomen. Over the course of several years, they raised money to fund the creation and placement of the new memorial.

 

Rebound patient faces charges in SUV theft

A recent incident involving a patient at Rebound Behavioral Health has neighbors in the area expressing concern about security at the Panhandle substance abuse and mental health treatment facility.
Rebound Behavioral Health, 135 E. Rebound Road, is a facility that has provided both residential and outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment on its rural 50-acre campus off U.S. 521 since 2013.
The organization touts its peaceful, secluded and open grounds as a key aspect of its mission to treat “mind, body and spirit.”

4 suspects sought in Tuesday night shooting

Lancaster police are looking for suspects in connection to two victims shot and an armed robbery Tuesday night on the 800 block of Woodland Drive.
Police responded to a call about 8:52 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers met two adult victims, both with apparent gunshot wounds, according to a Lancaster Police Department release.
A preliminary investigation, the release said, revealed the victims were working on a vehicle in the front yard when four African American males approached them.

 

Howard to serve on S.C. Mayors board

Lancaster Mayor John Howard was voted onto the Association of South Carolina Mayors board of directors Friday.
The first Lancaster mayor to serve on the board, Howard was selected by a nominating committee and approved by board members during the Municipal Association of South Carolina’s annual meeting.
Howard, who was elected mayor in a special election in February 2016, said joining the state board is an honor.
“It’s going to be fun,” Howard said. “I assure you that.”

 

No one hurt in drive-by shooting

Lancaster police are investigating a brazen daytime drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon at a home less than a block from the police station that endangered patrons at the Dollar General store.
Lancaster Police Department Chief Scott Grant said the incident happened about 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle traveling south on Hughes Street fired multiple shots at a home on the northwest corner of Hughes and Arch streets.
